GUEST SPEAKER: MIKE LOADES - DIRECTOR, MILITARY HISTORIAN

We are very fortunate to have a special guest speaker via Skype today. Mike Loades is a British weapons and general historian.  He is also an author, presenter, action arranger and director.

Mike has appeared as a primary presenter or supporting expert in many documentaries covering historical weapons. Behind the scenes, he has worked as an action arranger in over 100 screen productions. As a television presenter/host he is best known for the BBC series' Time Commanders, Weapons That Made Britain for Channel 4 and Weapon Masters for Discovery Networks.[5] He wrote and presented the two-hour special Going Medieval for H2 channel in 2012.

On-screen, Loades is well known for demonstrating military history from all periods in a hands-on style. He is an acknowledged expert horseman, charioteer, archer, horse archer, jouster, swordsman and black powder shooter.

Loades provided commentary about the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in a short documentary for the videogame Total War: Rome 2. While referring to Assassin's Creed, he said that despite his age, he was "blown away" by the work that was put in by the videogame industry to make their work more historically authentic.[2][3]

We will be having a guest speaker on Friday.  Our guest speaker is Chris Hennessy, and independent director/producer of his own production company Chris Hennessy Pictures.

Chris will be talking about a wide variety of topics by outlining the production process from a working professional in the field.  He will talk about marketing, selling your project and hiring crew.  He will also go over the soft skills of how to interview talent, warm up your interview subjects and how to direct projects.

Bio

All Chris planned on doing was filming his two toddlers in 1986 when he picked up a video camera for the first time.  He immediately became addicted to telling powerful stories with it. Chris quit his job as a sales & marketing rep. in 1990 and without even a film or video class under his belt became a full-time independent filmmaker and video producer!

Chris writes, produces, directs, interviews, edits and even hosts many of the films (totaling 1500) that he’s crafted for high-profile companies.

His recent clients include Google, OfficeMax, eBay, Deloitte, Kaiser, Four Seasons Hotel, KGO Radio San Fransisco, Zumba, Silver Creek Valley Country Club, The American Cancer Society and many more. Chris’s recent films several million online views.

"talent" refers to anyone who steps in front of and behind the lens on the set. In reality, you'll need to use regular people as talent for many of your videos. People who are not used to talking in front of the camera. People who will rely on you to make sure they perform well.

Whether your subjects are your boss, uncle, or a professional actor you need them to be a natural, communicative and not afraid-stressed.

Plan the shoot

Planning saves time and budget. Clarify beforehand with all concerned what the purpose of the video is and who the intended audience is and what the purpose of the interview is.

You don’t need to be an expert on the subject, but do know

1. about the person being interviewed

2. The topic of

2. Make a rough draft question list before the shoot, based on a pre-consultation with them

4. Lots of improv question asking

The Three S’s (not totally applicable for an interview video, but GREAT INFO

Storytelling. Videos that tell an engaging story are more likely to be liked, commented on and shared. Telling a story is far more interesting that a sales pitch.

Script. Always use a script, even if it’s a rough draft script. This gives the whole team direction and ensures the shots flow smoothly.

Have A Vision

You've got to not only know, but really believe, in your vision for the film. It helps to have an idea of the aesthetic that you're going for. Understanding and embracing your vision helps both you and everyone else involved in the production.

ON-SET ETIQUETTE

Practice teaches you the line between being too friendly and being too stern on set. NEVER cause yourself or others to be stressed, if you want everyone to work their best and be creative

Be firm in your vision and your direction, but also be respectful and open to collaboration with others. Make them feel good/comfortable/confident and they’ll be creative and perform at their best

Set Up , be prepared Before They Arrive

Arrive at the set well before your talent does so you can get everything set up before they arrive at the shoot. If you are unprepared and things are disorganized and in disarray, you'll make your talent nervous and add unneeded stress to the shoot.

Go to Their Office/Location

People feel more comfortable when they are in familiar places. Consider doing interviews in the subject's office rather than in a formal studio setting.

Sound

Make sure there are no distracting noises in the location and environment you’ve selected. Do you have a suitable microphone? Do you need a sound person? Make sure you keep audio in mind at all times.

Roll Tape While You/They Rehearse

A rehearsal will help your talent become more familiar with the material and more comfortable in front of the camera. When you do rehearse, it's not a bad idea to roll tape. Some of the best takes may come when the talent is relaxed and not "on" for the official shoot.

Don't Let Them Know You're Recording

Many camcorders let you turn off the tally light that indicates when a camera is recording. cover it up with gaphers

Be Personable

Be yourself. Be GREAT to work with. Inspire, make them laugh, Talk to them don’t order them. Get them talking about something that takes their mid off the interview…. the 49ers, their kids, their job, their pet, their hometown. This will help your talent AND crew feel more comfortable and at ease. They will respond to your coaching better

Have them Talk to a Person, Not the Lens

Many people are uncomfortable talking to a camera lens. Make it easier for these people by having them speak to a person next to the camera instead of directly to the lens itself. It helps if the interviewer sits in a chair next to the camera and the two have a conversation, ignoring the lens altogether.

Give Her Something to Hold

If the talent doesn't know what to do with her hands, give her a prop to hold(other than a cellphone). Often this will keep a subject from fidgeting noticeably on camera. Have them bring their teddy bear :)

Eliminate Distractions

Usually, the fewer people in attendance at the shoot, the better. Your job is to help them concentrate on their role and the topic at hand. Too many people milling around can make your subject uneasy and lose concentration

Be Flexible and be able to Improv

What works for one person may not work for the next. The situation largely depends on the individual involved. Be prepared to tailor your coaching technique to each person you tape. Sometimes asking the same question in a different way(or with different words) later in an interview gets a more powerful response. Be able to ask a question than after they respond, improv a question based ion their answer
